I learned to shoot differently than today's players. I did not have a shooting coach; just a dad and a basket in my front yard. I did not play year-round on a team; I played in my front yard, at recess and at a local gym. I never had a shooting DVD, just ESPN and TNT.

I remember the late 80's Michigan State vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay First Round NCAA Tournament game. Wisconsin-Green Bay was on the verge of the upset when future NBA SG Steve Smith hit a three-pointer. I remember the play because Smith dribbled left. When my dad got home, I asked him why a coach would draw up a play for a right-handed player to go left. He explained that a lot of right-handed players preferred to dribble left into their shot because it is easier to square their body. I went outside, tried it and shot several hundred shots going left over the weekend. That is how I learned. I saw something, inquired and practiced.

I follow the same process with my coaching and training. Over the past decade training and coaching players from beginners through professionals, I formed a five step learning progression to develop successful shooters which I outline in 180 Shooter: 5 Steps to Shooting 90% from the Free Throw Line, 50% from the Floor and 40% from the 3-Point Line.

180 Shooter is not a quick fix. Shooters do not develop over night. Instead, 180 Shooter outlines a gradual progression to develop successful, consistent shooting mechanics. Anyone can be a shot taker; 180 Shooter describes a process to become a shot maker.

“I always look forward to reviewing new work done by Brian McCormick, because I know it will be well-researched, insightful, and cutting edge. His 180 Shooter did not disappoint. Brian has a critical eye and great ability to break down complex basketball movements into their most fundamental elements, and then incorporate an effective training protocol to progressively teach their mastery. 180 Shooter will be a valued addition to my training resource library.”

— Rick Allison, Shooting Coach, Lone Star Basketball Academy

“Brian McCormick is an outstanding coach, instructor and writer. His newest book, 180 Shooter, covers in great detail how to become a better shooter from the ground up. Brian worked for my program (Hoop Masters) as a coach and his attention to detail and ability to teach young eager players is a special gift. I would recommend the 180 Shooter to any player, coach, or parent that really wants to understand all aspects of improving your shooting percentages and overall shooting skills. In this day and age of quick fixes and short cuts it's refreshing to have someone take the time to really explain how to become a better shooter. If you follow the drills, practice the habits outlined in this book and really believe that you can become a better shooter. You will. There are no short cuts to improvement.”

— Jerome Green, Program Director, Hoop Masters AAU Program

Basketball development is a process. The goal is to develop players through age-appropriate drills and skills to enhance their overall development through their childhood and adolescence. Cross Over covers Athletic, Tactical and Technical skill development through four distinct stages with over 125 drills. Cross Over is an entire development program for a child, coach, team or organization to take players from 8-18 years old. Cross Over differs from other basketball instruction books because it develops a philosophy of development rather than just describing drills. Within the philosophy, Cross Over uses the drills to develop learning progressions to teach basketball and athletic skills.
"Brian McCormick reflects on the fundamentals needed for youth basketball development not only in America, but on an international level, thus giving a well-rounded perspective on how to improve the game around the world."

- Maurizio Gherardini, Toronto Raptors' Vice President and Assistant General Manager

Shortly after Larry Brown returned to the NBA as the Head Coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, he told Sports Illustrated, "The things they don't know boggles my mind." Coaches at every level crave intelligent basketball players. However, how does a coach develop this game awareness?

Through drills, situations, instruction and questioning, Developing Basketball Intelligence demonstrates how to teach game awareness and basketball intelligence.

DBI explains the basic tactical skills of every offense - from pick-and-rolls to 3v2 fast breaks - but moves beyond the skill execution to the all important perceptual, anticipatory and decision-making skills which separate the expert performers. Developing Basketball Intelligence teaches tactical skills, but also develops the characteristics of a high basketball IQ player.
